Backlinks

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. Inbound links were originally important (prior to the emergence of search engines) as a primary means of web navigation; today their significance lies in search engine optimization (SEO). The number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page (for example, this is used by Google to determine the PageRank of a webpage). Outside of SEO, the backlinks of a webpage may be of significant personal, cultural or semantic interest: they indicate who is paying attention to that page.

Search engine rankings

Search engines often use the number of backlinks that a website has as one of the most important factors for determining that website's search engine ranking, popularity and importance. Google's description of their PageRank system. It should also be noted that building too many Backlinks over a short period of time can get a website's ranking penalized, and in extreme cases, the website is de-indexed altogether. Anything above a couple of hundred a day is considered "dangerous".

  • Getting Backlinks the Natural Way

There are many sites which offer hundredth and thousands of backlinks for few bucks in a week.  While it may sound good to have that many links to your site, you are creating "spam" links from sites which are considered bad quality sites.  This will only damage your pocketbook and will do nothing for your rankings. Search engines want to see your site building backlinks to it naturally. There is nothing natural about 500 backlinks all showing up in 1 day.

I would recommend to space out building your backlinks. Building backlinks too fast may hurt your sites rankings rather than improve it.

  • Getting Backlinks

It is out of question that quality backlinks are crucial to SEO success. More, the question is how to get them.

The idea behind including backlinks as part of the page rank algorithm is that if a page is good, people will start linking to it. And the more backlinks a page has, the better. But in practice it is not exactly like this. Or at least you cannot always rely on the fact that your contents is good and people will link to you. Yes, if your content is good and relevant you can get a lot of quality backlinks, including from sites with similar topic as yours but what you get without efforts could be less than what you need to successfully promote your site.
